MANDATE:

To provide delivery of services to the Walpole Island First Nation in accordance with Walpole Island First Nation by-laws, policies and procedures and abide with all relevant federal legislation, regulations and Department policies for the present and future needs of the Walpole Island First Nation.

SERVICE PROVIDED:

We are responsible for land transfers, permits, and coordinating land surveys, all agricultural, residential, hunt club leasing and researching of land holdings for members of our First Nation. At times we are asked to assist members with estates issues. The Lands Department is also involved with Band projects that may require some of our assistance for example Band Election, 911, Community Votes, Ratification Votes and Referendums.

CLIENTS SERVED:

Band members, cottage leases, farm lessees and hunt club leases.

Erica is in charge of all leasing and leasing aspects, such as negotiation. She is currently handles over 100 agriculture leases, 45 cottage leases and 4 Hunt Clubs leases. Mike is responsible for the handling of all land transfers as requested by band members and also land allotments. Mike also does land surveys as requested by band members and other WIFN departments. Mike is available on a request basis to mark out lots as needed by community members, also for housing purposes. Dawn assists all lands personnel with leasing, land transfers, correspondences, record keeping and filing. She processes and submits all leases, permits and land transfers to AANDC for registration through the ILRS (Indian Land Registry System). She prepares the Lands Agendas, schedules meetings, takes minutes and submits them to Council. She also handles our accounts payable and accounts receivable.

OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED:

• We are responsible for land transfers, permits, land surveys, all agricultural, residential, hunt club leasing
• We research land holdings for members
• We assist with Estate matters when requested
• We are able to provide you with a listing of all your land holdings along with abstract pages that show the history of your specific lot
• The Lands Department also assists with Band Elections, Ratification Votes and Referendums

OTHER INFORMATION:

The Lands Department is an active member of the Ontario Aboriginal Lands Managers Association. It is through this organization we actively network and receive professional development and technical expertise in lands management issues.
The Lands Department has access to the AANDC Indian Lands Registry System which is an internet based system that provides us with updated information on the lands of the Walpole Island First Nation. We are able to research and print out abstract reports and survey plans.

To provide delivery of services to the Walpole Island First Nation in accordance with Walpole Island First Nation policies and procedures and abide with all relevant federal legislation, regulations and Departmental policies to keep the Indian Register up to date for the Walpole Island First Nation.

SERVICES PROVIDED:

We are responsible for the registration of births, deaths, marriages, divorces and the issuing of Indian Status Cards. We provide the membership with blood quantum letters, OHIP letters when requested. Membership also assists with the registering of new babies by paying for Birth Documents that are required. We assists with DNA testing for children to prove paternity and have our children categorized correctly in the Indian Register. We issue Chief and Council Cards upon request. The Membership Department also assists in the Band Elections, School Board Elections, Referendums and Ratification Votes.

CLIENT SERVED:

Total Band Membership of the Walpole Island First Nation is approximately 4,419 as of June 2012. We also assist members of other First Nations with status cards.
